The making of a sign

How a custom sign comes together.

The words, artwork and wood work together. These are the main decisions and workshop steps behind the examples below.

  1. Start with the message

Discuss wording, names, dates, artwork, approximate size and where the sign will be displayed. These shape the layout, lettering and overall profile.

  2. Shape & carve the details

A prepared wood panel is shaped and carved on the CNC. Lettering, outlines and artwork become part of the wood rather than just a flat graphic.

  3. Bring out the character

Surface preparation and finishing bring out the grain and carved details. The wood choice, color and finish are discussed for the individual sign.

The story behind the work

About the collection.

A custom sign starts with what you want it to say—and where it will live. Names, dates, family sayings and artwork can be combined with a shape and layout chosen for the individual piece.

The photographs show several directions: a paddle-shaped family blessing, a personalized family-name design, and an arched campsite welcome sign. Finished views sit alongside genuine workshop stages so you can see how the details develop.

The Faith Over Fear project is part of this collection too. Its full case study includes the layered flag-and-cross design, finished photographs, progress images and a short video. More sign projects can be added here as the collection grows.

These are examples of custom work and workshop progress, not a live stock list. Wording, artwork, shape, size and finish are discussed for each new sign.

Original photographs by John Carter. Eight unique images show three sign designs at different stages. Workshop-stage photographs are labeled as such; original lettering, framing and natural wood colors are preserved.
